This painting is a reminder of the passage from Matthew 2:13–15, when Joseph is instructed by the angel of the Lord to flee to Egypt with Mary and the newborn Christ, escaping the massacre ordered by Herod.
God has proven His love for the foreigner since Leviticus 19, when He commands His people to love the foreigner as themselves, and even more so when He proves His love for the foreigner by loving him as His own Son.
The Messiah, who had been with the Father since the foundation of the world, was now wrapped in cloths in the arms of a Jewish woman, fleeing from the very land He Himself created.
